The Arizona Alliance for Peaceful Justice, Arizona Civil Liberties Union, and Muslim Student Association of ASU are co-sponsoring a
Protest to protect civil liberties Friday, June 14th from 5:00-6:00 pm at the Phoenix FBI office 201 E. Indianola in central Phoenix with guest speaker Eleanor Eisenberg, Executive Director, AzCLU
On Thursday, May 30, President Bush and Attorney General John Ashcroft lifted limits on domestic spying by the FBI that were instituted by President Ford in 1976 in response to abuses by FBI agents during Cointelpro. Cointelpro compiled information on individuals and groups without reason to believe that a crime had been committed -- its operation focused on political groups and individuals, most notably Martin Luther King, Jr.'s civil rights work. The administration claims that the Levi Guidelines, which stopped the FBI from continuing these harrassing anti-democratic processes, have been tying the hands of agnts to conduct anti-terrorism work. No comments were made by the Bush administration as to when, if ever, the Levi Guidelines would be re-instated.
here's how you can help: attend the protest - bring an umbrella for Street Theater forward this email to like-minded groups and individuals interested in protecting our civil liberties invite organizations to co-sponsor this protest. AAPJ welcomes groups that work to protect civil liberties. contact ksinema@cox.net to become a co-sponsor to help plan, come to a meeting on Sunday, June 9th from 1-2 pm at the Tempe Friends Meeting House, 318 E. 15th Street (The old address I gave was WRONG!!!)
